Commissioner's Message Archive 2003

09/22/03 8:30 PM

Playoff results | Final Standings

Brad Cychosz is your 2003 GOBN Champion! Congratulations, Brad! $375 and the championship t-shirt is on its way to you.

As Brad has alluded to, he is the first two-time GOBN champion. In fact, he's only the second two-time champion in AFSN history. Wade Kizewski won two fantasy football championships: CNN/SI Sucks 1999 and In Football We Trust 2000. It's quite a feat considering there have been 19 AFSN championships since 1998.

When Cychosz won the championship in 2001, we were all saying "even a blind squirrel will find a nut sometime." And we didn't think Cychosz would do well in this new format, especially after the ultra-boring Wilkerson trade. It's time to stop underestimating Brad. The Jolly Roger is for real.

The Commissioner's Office does have a bone to pick with our new champion, however. Aside from the great "bowing before PNC Park" and "Hell freezes over" pictures, Brad has posted pictures of a donkey, transvesties, painted women, and a fat lady. For shame. And thanks to Mr. Thompson for saving us from the fat lady with his interim post.

After finishing last in 2001 and 2002, Colin came back with a vengance this year. He finished second and won $235. Plus he's in the process of moving in with his long-time girlfriend. (That should help soothe his disappointment in losing the championship game.)

Ironically, all of the Round 2 matchups were blowouts except the battle to stay out of last place. I beat Jack 5.5-4.5. The difference? I had as many wins as Jack (6) while having 13 fewer starts.

DT was 1 HR away from the second 10-0 skunking in GOBN playoff history. The only team to do it? DT in 2000 versus Tim Hendrickson.

Drew Dockery won the $30 fifth place prize. It's a small taste of justice for Drew who placed 2nd in all three Traditional Scoring reports and the end-of-the-year Breakdown standings. He just couldn't win when he needed to, down the stretch at the end of the regular season.

Week 25

Colin had 13 starts last week. Jeriome Robertson's (awful) Sunday start was eliminated.

Team 51146 won their fifth weekly prize. They won 5 of the last 11 weeks and the $5 Best Week Award.

Drew Dockery set new bests with 10 W and a 0.918 WHIP.

Updated Documentation

LOTS of updated documentation. Playoff results, Final Standings, the Week 25 Traditional Scoring report, and updated Money Lists are all available at the GOBN @ AFSN.net web site. Look for the tag for everything that's new.

For a complete record of this season, download The Good Ol' Boy Network Spreadsheet (305 KB).

Off-Season & Beyond

You may trade in the off-season! If you make a trade, contact me and I'll send an email to the league. The RFC period in the off-season is 7 days. The deadline is two weeks before the draft.

Because this was our first year under the new rules, all players have a 2004 contract year. That means you don't have to make a decision regarding their contract until after the 2004 season. However, you do have to submit your keepers to me by two weeks before the draft. You must keep 5-10 players. Your keepers' salaries count against your $260 draft cap.

The 2004 Auction Draft will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2004. It will hopefully take place at Jon Tepp's house in Waunakee, WI (near Madison). And the first annual GOBN golf outting may also take place that weekend. Stay tuned.

Round 2 Statistics

Team 51146 won their fourth weekly prize -- their second in a row. And unless someone unseats them next week, they're in line to win the Best Week Award as well.

Cychosz tied the high for W in one week with 9.

Speaking of Cychosz, he had 13 starts last week. His Sunday Hideo Nomo start was removed. Jack also had 13 starts. His Sunday Randy Johnson 12 K complete game shutout was removed.

Gentlemen, this is it. Almost six months of hard work and it all comes down to this week. Even though I'm destined to lose to Jack and finish in last place, I've had a great time competing with you guys.

I think we have a great league. Fun (and funny) league owners who have the baseball IQ to match their competitiveness. And the history and tradition to make each year more important than the last.

The many many news articles have been very entertaining, and the Message Board, as always, has been lively.

Thanks for making this league one of the highlights of each summer for me.

Coming next week...

  • Round 2 playoff results
  • Final standings
  • Prize totals
  • Traditional scoring statistics for weeks 1-25 (see where you would've placed in a traditional rotisserie league)
  • Reminders regarding off-season rules

09/08/03 10:10 PM

Team 51146 won Week 23 with 69 points, but didn't have enough to beat Cychosz in their Round 1 tilt.

To tell you the truth, I can't believe Cychosz is in the championship game for the second time in three years. Like many others, I didn't think Cychosz could survive, much less thrive, in our new format. But he did. I know he won't get it from many of you, but I think he deserves a lot of credit and a hardy pat on the back... as long as he doesn't post any more transvestite or naked-painted-chick pictures.

The updated Playoff picture is on the AFSN.net Playoffs page.

The two teams with the best regular season winning percentage are playing for the championship. It's Cychosz vs. Walsh.

I think the entire league is happy to see Colin there. As was pointed out on the Message Board, Colin started strong in 1999 and 2000 with 2nd and 3rd place finishes. But he's finished dead last the last two years.

Of course, I run the f***ing league and have never been in the playoffs, much less the championship game. So I hope all of you chumps are happy to see me in the championship game when I make it in 2026.

In other playoff developments, the higher seeds won all of their matchups except me. I lost to Dan (unbelievable!) and play Jack to try and stay out of 10th.

Jeff, I assume you're going to double-check all of this for me.

P.S. Colin had 14 starts last week. According to the rules, the last two pitchers to throw their first pitch were removed from his Active lineup. However, the change did NOT affect the outcome of his matchup against Tepper.

09/07/03 9:00 PM

Drew won Week 21 with 73.5 points.

Jack called me after the Vikings' glorious victory earlier today and said I should just go ahead and declare him the Week 22 winner. He said he kicked some serious ass.

I couldn't just take his word for it, so I did the math. Sure enough, Jack won Week 22 with 82 points. And he set new season highs for HR (22) and RBI (72).

Playoff results tomorrow...

09/01/03 7:00 PM

Round 1 Week 1 of the playoffs is complete. It's still anyone's ballgame.

I'm 2 weeks behind on Weekly Winner statistics. I'll catch up eventually, I promise.

Now that Round 1 Week 2 is underway, you can check how you're doing for the entire Round by going to the AFSN.net Playoffs page and clicking Round 1 Statistics.

08/25/03 11:05 PM

A reminder that the 12 starts per week rule is still in effect for the playoffs. Even though a playoff round is 2 weeks long, you can still only have a maximum of 12 starts during each one of those weeks.

08/25/03 6:30 PM

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The last week of the regular season, with all its potential for upset, didn't change a thing. No one blew out anyone. And for the most part, the team that was supposed to win, did.

However, Team 61514 did come within 3 games of winning their division. Remarkable considering most of us considered them out of the running for a playoff spot not too long ago.

Cychosz and Walsh have identical records, so the head-to-head tie-breaker is used to determine the division winner. Colin actually beat Cychosz 2 out of 3 matchups. But the matchup Colin lost, he lost 0.5-9.5. Cychosz won the regular season series 17-13, so he is your division champion. (Tough luck, Colin.)

Tepper won his division (if you can call it that) to cap off an all "Eight Ball" regular season.

I'll leave the playoff odds analysis to Mr. Thompson.

The FINAL Wild Card picture:

Team GB

Cychosz * --
Walsh --
51146 2.0
Tepp * 2.5
Coughlin 5.0
DT 8.0

* Division winner
The playoff rules and brackets are on the AFSN.net Playoffs page. Remember, each playoff round is 2 weeks long, and everyone is in the playoffs. Those of us seeded 5-10 are competing in the Consolation Bracket for the $30 5th place prize... and our pride.

What a great regular season! Lots of interesting trades and close right to the end.

Week 21 weekly winner statistics and a new Traditional Scoring report are yet to come.

P.S. Had Cychosz not picked up Jeff Conine on waivers this week, he would've been at the top of the waivers list (as he has been all year) and could've had his choice of Randy Johnson or Tim Worrell. The question now is, are any of the Consolation Bracket owners going to let those two guys slide to a contender?

08/18/03 10:50 PM

Whoa, Nellie! What a wild week it was, and what a wild week it promises to be! I can't remember a GOBN season this up in the air with only one week to go.

Team 666 logged the first 10-0 win of the season. "Well, yeah. But they played the Whiffers," you say. Team Dan did have the worst week of the 2003 season, scoring only 17 "weekly winner" points. As a matter of fact, the Whiffers had the worst week since Tim Hendrickson's 2000 week 25 performance. (Remember Tim? The original "quiet guy.") But Team 90210 had the best week of the season, scoring 86.5 "weekly winner" points -- 19 more than their nearest competitor. So they would've beaten anybody this week, but it took a Whiffer matchup to come out of it 10-0.

Team 61761 also set a new high for SB this season with 18. That's the most SB in one week in over three years, tying Jack's 2000 week 7 high.

The funny thing about Team 555-1212's performance is that Jeff was in Colorado part of the week and left the team in Jason's hands. It may be time for a coup at Team 911 headquarters.

I like Dan. Always have, always will. But this has to be pointed out. Dan is 59.5 games back of the Ground Rule Double division leading Cychosz. He is 26.5 games back of his nearest competitor -- me. With one week to go, he's 25.5 games back of the worst regular season finish on record, Tim Hendrickson's 0.380 winning percentage in 2000. Dan's winning percentage is currently 0.290. But look out for Dan next year because this statement has never been more true -- he's due!

The current Wild Card picture with only one week to go:

Team GB

Cychosz * --
Walsh 2.0
Tepp * 4.0
51146 5.0
Coughlin 7.0
DT 9.0

* Division leader
Week 20's games didn't decide anything. They actually made the race even closer. Colin won 7.5-2.5 over Drew. Cychosz lost 4-6 to Coughlin. So now Colin is only 2 games back of Cychosz for the division and he plays... drum roll please... Dan Seeger this week! Cychosz plays Drew. (Note: Drew had 3 HR and 10 RBI on Monday.) So I'll say it right now: Colin Walsh will be your Ground Rule Double division champion. Cychosz will make the playoffs as a wild card.

I just don't think Team DT can climb back into the playoffs after only splitting with The Shitty Tigers this week 5-5. (DT lost SB, HR, and K by only 1 each.) Especially because he's playing Tepper this week.

That matchup doesn't bode well for Tepper either, however. Team 64115 plays me and Coughlin plays Jack. Two very favorable matchups. If Tepper falters against DT and Coughlin kicks Jack's ass, Coughlin could win the division. (He's only 3 games back.) Not only that, but Tepper could fall out of the playoffs if both Coughlin and Team 12345 kick ass.

Good luck, gentlemen.

IMPORTANT

Next Monday's transactions are during the first round of the playoffs. Remember, you can only add 2 players during each round of the playoffs. And each round is 2 weeks long.

Any add transactions next Monday will count against your 2 adds for playoff round one.

Read the rest of the playoff rules.

08/11/03 4:25 PM

Cychosz's improbable season continues as he wins Week 19. However, the Commissioner's Office is looking into a rules amendment prohibiting pictures of men dressed up as women on the League Home page. The last thing league owners want to see when they log in is that picture. Jolly Roger's legal team with be hearing from this office.

Coughlins Team tied the high mark for wins with 9. And they got in DT's way with a 7-3 win, passing him in the standings.

Tepper did what he had to do, beating Seeger 9.5-0.5 to regain the division lead.

With only 2 weeks to go in the regular season, I think this is going to be the closest race for the playoffs in GOBN history. I'm tempted to declare Team 51146 out of it, but as pointed out by Dr. Thompson, they play Dan and I the last two weeks.

Tepper and DT continue their fight. They each play creampuffs this week, but they play each other the final week.

And don't forget about Coughlins Team. They have a tough matchup against Cychosz this week, but play Jack next week.

It's up for grabs!

The current Wild Card picture with only 2 weeks to go:

Team GB

Cychosz * --
Tepp * 5.5
Walsh 5.5
Coughlin 9.0
DT 10.0
51146 11.0

* Division leader

08/04/03 3:35 PM

Jack won Week 18. Colin set a new SV high with 10. Team 51146 tied their own high mark of 14 SB.

I wouldn't want to play Jack right now... but I do this week. Our game doesn't matter (except where pride is concerned), but DT and Coughlin better watch out if Jack stays hot. He's 14.5-5.5 the last two weeks against Drew and Tepp.

Speaking of Drew, he tried his damnedest to make a run at the playoffs, but a 5.5-4.5 loss to Dan last week and a 7-3 loss to Jack the previous week have sealed his fate.

DT's annual 2nd half run for the playoffs continues. He beat Colin 7-3 last week. He's 51-19 over the last 7 weeks and has taken a 2-game division lead over Tepper. Amazing!

The current Wild Card picture with only 3 weeks to go:

Team GB

That bastard
Cychosz * --
Walsh 6.5
DT * 8.5
Tepp 10.5
51146 11.5
Coughlin 11.5

* Division leader
The 2004 Auction Draft date remains Sat, March 27, 2004. Be there or be square.

I encourage everyone to answer Tepper's challenge and place your bets regarding the playoff picture.

07/28/03 4:40 PM (Updated)

Tepper won Week 17. Colin set a new RBI high with 67.

DT's annual 2nd half run for the playoffs began Week 12. Starting Week 12, he's won 9-1, 7-3, 6.5-3.5, 8-2, 8.5-1.5, and tied me this week 5-5. He's 44-16 over the last 6 weeks. Tepper is only 25-35 over the same span.

Over the last couple weeks, DT and Coughlins Team has swapped positions. DT is 4th overall. Coughlins Team is 6th, thanks in part to an 8-2 loss to DT in Week 15.

Don't overlook the "playing for next year" teams just yet. We might get in your way on your way to the playoffs. I tied DT 5-5 this week, and Jack beat Drew 7-3. Dan on the other hand...

Cychosz's 8.5-1.5 victory over Dan this week puts him in the division lead.

The current Wild Card picture:

Team GB

Cychosz * --
Walsh 4.0
Tepp * 7.5
DT 10.0
51146 10.5
Coughlin 12.0

The TRADE DEADLINE is 11:59 PM Central Time on July 31. That's this Thursday night! All trades must be announced to the league by then. If approved by the Commissioner, they will be executed on Monday, August 4.

An owner has requested we move the draft date from Saturday, March 27 (NCAA Tourn Elite 8 - 2 gms) to Saturday, March 20 (NCAA Tourn Rnd 2 - 8 gms) because of a conflict he has. Vote in the new poll to let me know if you're willing to do this.

07/21/03 3:15 PM

Drew won the shortened Week 16.

Four trades in one week!

The correct answer to the poll regarding my long Commissioner's Message is "All of the above."

Peace out.

07/14/03 3:55 PM

Weeks 14 and 15 were won by two newcomers to the 2003 Weekly Winners list. Coughlins Team won 14. Team 51146 won week 15. You might say that these two teams on are the rise, poised to make a run at the playoffs. Well, you'd be right about one of them.

A new Traditional Scoring report is available.

  • Drew's War Pigs are the team to watch. He's placed 1st in both Traditional Scoring reports and he ranks 1st in Breakdown record (Standings/Breakdown and Standings/Power). Yet he only has the 7th best head-to-head record. That will change. Statistically, his is the best team in the league and his last two deals make the Pigs even better.

  • Colin's team is good. We knew that.

  • Team 51146 is on the rise, placing 3rd on this Traditional Scoring report.

  • Coughlins Team is lucky to be in 4th. And now that Coughlin has pissed everybody off, I don't think they can make a deal to keep them in the running. But we'll see.

  • Tepp's team is good. We knew that too.

  • Cychosz should be thanking his lucky stars he's got the 2nd best head-to-head record. He ranks only 5th is Traditional Scoring and Breakdown. His head-to-head lead may keep him in playoff contention even if he falters in the second half.

  • DT is average and shouldn't make the playoffs, especially when he only has half as many starts as Cychosz.

  • Jack, Dan, and I stink and are building for next year.
Cychosz had 14 starts week 14. Nomo's game started later than everyone else's, so his start was scratched. And Mark Redman had the best ERA of the three remaining starters, so his start was scratched. But he still won the week 6.5-3.5 -- the final score was unaffected.

Cychosz is complaining about the trades. Trades like these are the reason we switched to this format. It gives the top teams an avenue besides free agency to improve, and it gives the bottom feeders a reason to remain active -- building for next year.

I think the new rules are working out great! From 2000-2002, only 3 trades were made. There have been 15 so far this season (including the two under review for this week). And now that transactions are processed only once a week, everyone has a chance to pick up players -- addressing a complaint heard in years past from those who don't have 24-hour access to a computer. And free agent bidding has made picking up players much more interesting. (And Brad, someone who's only interested in trading Wilkerson for Ramirez shouldn't be piping up on this issue.)

Finally, Colin mentioned my tree/basement problems. (Thanks for your kind words, Colin. How'd you know?) Two HUGE thunderstorms blew through Bloomington/Normal this week. Tuesday's storm included 88 MPH winds. And after Wednesday's storm, we had had 8 inches of rain in two days. What the newspaper called a 100-year rain. A tree fell on my house on Tuesday, and my basement flooded on Wednesday. Pictures are here.

P.S. Brad, if you were involved in as many trade negotiations as the rest of us, you'd know that prying a quality keeper from teams is difficult. The trades may seem lopsided to you, but think of it this way: What would it take to pry Vernon Wells from your clutches? A lot, I suspect.

The price for keepers this year is high. But it's like the economy. As the trade deadline approaches and/or next year with some experience under our belts, the price may go down. We'll see.

06/30/03 2:00 PM

Cychosz won week 12 and DT won week 13 -- two perennial second-half teams. New highs: DT 66 R, Cychosz 62 RBI, 51146 14 SB.

The TRADE DEADLINE is 11:59 PM Central Time on July 31. All trades must be announced to the league by then. If approved by the Commissioner, they will be executed on Monday, August 4.

06/29/03 4:40 PM

SPORTSLINE PROBLEM

As Christensen and Cychosz have experienced the last two weeks, SportsLine is having a problem with daily lineup changes made too soon after the 11 AM deadline. Even though the transactions report will indicate the transactions are effective tomorrow, they will actually take effect today.

I have contacted SportsLine about the problem and will let you know what they say.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

To protect yourself, don't make lineup changes too soon after the 11 AM deadline. For example, don't make changes at 11:05. Instead, wait and make changes at 11:30.

I will be out of town on vacation from June 20-29. Please contact Jack George regarding any league business.

Speaking of filling-in... Colin has agreed to act as Commissioner if Jack and I ever trade again. Please vote.

06/09/03 3:12 PM

Colin won his 3rd Weekly Win in 5 weeks. Aside from Colin, everyone's ERA and WHIP this week sucked!

Jack hit 20 HRs. Colin hit 19. 51146 batted .352. Jack batted .340. Check out all of the statistics at The Good Ol' Boy Network @ AFSN.net, including the Best/Worst Week report.

Rant

WMVP AM 1000 in Chicago recently cut an hour from the Tony Kornheiser show (now only 9-11 AM) and is airing the Jim Rome show in its place. I'd never heard Rome on the radio before. He's awful! A sample from today:

"I love kids. I've got a son myself. But what is it with athletes and their kids?... (5 second pause) ... Why do we have to see that kid all race long during the Belmont?... (5 second pause) ... I mean, come on... (5 second pause) ... Dusty Baker's kid almost gets trampled... (10 second pause) ... and now this."

It's like he's reading the paper and doing his show at the same time.

Vote in the new poll. Rack me. I'm out.

06/02/03 10:40 PM

Everyone but Seeger participated in transactions this week.

Cychosz won week 9, his first Weekly Win of the season.

I'm not exactly on Lick & Lou's good side right now, but it has to be said: Coughlins Team got rocked by the Jolly Roger last week. It brought them down into the pack, but they are still in 5th place overall.

No "big time" matchups this week, though I always look forward to Team Zip Code vs. the Shitty Crickets.

Whiffers vs. Lumberjacks this week. Someone has to win, right?

05/29/03 9:50 PM

The league has spoken, and some of it loudly! Next year's auction draft cap remains $260. Thanks for discussing it.

05/28/03 12:20 PM

Tepper won week 8, his first Weekly Win of the season.

Sat, March 27, 2004

in Waunakee, WI, near Madison. Put it on your calendars now! Everyone (except Dan who lives in Florida) needs to be there. No exceptions! We just can't have an auction draft without everyone being there.

Our draft cap this year was $300. The plan is to reduce that cap for next year's auction draft to $260. Should we? Vote in the new poll.

Transactions are done. I'll do the Weekly Winner stats and post some witty comments on Tuesday night.

05/26/03 8:44 PM

Ah, the great outdoors. There's nothing better than sleeping on the ground and not showering for 3 days.

I'm back from my camping trip. The car is unpacked, I've taken a shower, and I'm ready for Transaction Monday. I'll send out an email and post something here when I'm done.

05/22/03 10:53 AM

I've posted a new 2004 AUCTION DRAFT DATE poll with fewer options. It turns out I have a wedding on Sat Apr 3, so I removed that option. And the Sat Apr 10 option only got 2 votes in the first poll, so I removed that option too. All of the other options received 3 votes, so they are back up for voting again.

Monday Transaction Processing I'm going camping this weekend but will be home on Monday. However, I probably won't get home on time to have the transaction processing done by 5 PM. The deadline for requests is still Monday at noon, but I may not get the transaction processing done until late Monday night.

05/19/03 5:55 PM

Cliché-Ridden Paragraph Of The Week: "The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer" as Walsh wins his second Weekly Winner prize in a row and stays on top of the Ground Rule Double Division. We're 1/3 of the way through the regular season and it's clear that "the cream is rising to the top." Going into last week, Walsh, Dockery, Tepp, and Coughlin had the four best records, and they all won handily.

Meanwhile, the rest of us losers bellied up to the cesspool that is free agency (Transactions Log):

  • The revolving door that is the Jolly Roger continues to turn. Cychosz signed 4 free agents last week, and dropped 3 of those players this week. The over/under on how long Casey, Bradley, and Young will remain on Cychosz's roster is 2 weeks.

  • Team 51146 picked up clutch-hitter-of-the-moment Todd Sears. Obviously, they are in danger of having their worst AFSN season ever. But unlike some, I think the articles are hilarious. "It's not like I have time for negative rhetoric." That's funny, people.

  • In an attempt to stay on top, and after submitting his bid for Damaso Marte too late last week, Coughlin continues his desperate grasp for saves. He picked up the two latest closers-of-the-moment: Person and Eldred.

  • Seeger got outbid on Cory Lidle last week. He learned his lesson and outbid Walsh and 51146 on Edgar Martinez this week. Martinez lies around for 7 weeks and suddenly 3 teams want him at once. Go figure.

  • The Augie Fade fired their conditioning coach today. First Vidro went down with a groin injury and then Piazza couldn't even back away from the batter's box without pulling his. Pierzynski will fill in for Piazza while he is out.
Those of you who haven't already, please vote in the 2004 Auction Draft Date poll. Find the poll on the left hand side of this page and click More Polls.

Gentlemen, I've posted a "real" poll for everyone on the left hand side of this page.

Next year's draft will be an auction draft. I haven't asked her yet, but I'm hoping to hold the auction at my sister's house in Waunakee, WI, near Madison. Everyone (except Dan who lives in Florida) needs to be there. No exceptions! We just can't have an auction draft without everyone being there.

Please vote in the poll to let me know when you'd like the auction to take place in 2004.

Loaiza going from non-roster invitee to ace for ChiSox
May 13, 2003
SportsLine.com wire reports

CHICAGO -- Esteban Loaiza was a non-roster invitee to spring training for the Chicago White Sox. Now the right-hander is tied for the major league lead with seven victories.

Colin Walsh won week 6. Drew took 2nd. A changing of the guard in the GOBN? Further evidence...

I put together a Traditional Scoring report for weeks 1-6. Drew took 1st. Colin took 2nd. 51146 took 7th.

My run down of today's transactions (Transactions Log):

  • Cychosz replaces 4 mediocre players with 4 different mediocre players. Bradley is going to have to learn the fine art of the trade soon. For some reason, this year's free agent market is bare.

  • Seeger and his 4 healthy starting pitchers desperately needed help. But he got outbid on his only request (Cory Lidle), the only player bid on by more than one team this week! Sorry (again), Dan.

  • Jack's desperation showed with his four-player free agent bonanza. But again, all mediocre pickups at best.

  • I'll leave the rest of the league to comment on my transactions.
A fantastic schedule this week!
  • Team 51146 cast-offs play their old team. It's Team 51146 vs. The-Team-Previously-Known-As-Team 51147.

  • Former Eight Ball co-owners play each other. A classic GOBN rivalry. Jolly Roger vs. King WormDog the Great.
Commissioner's Edict #1
Whoever keeps posting those stupid polls where only "sucks" and "blows" are options (Cychosz), the Commissioner's Office Public Affairs Committee is investigating and will hold a sentencing hearing later this week.
Tepper, I love a good pair of moccasins. Thanks.

Esteban Loaiza's next start: Tuesday vs. Baltimore.

Long live the Good Ol' Boy Network!

In the May 5th Sporting News, Ken Rosenthal says of Loaiza, "He's on a journey: from teaser to winner."

P.S. Why am I the only one that voted my new nickname should be "The Splendid Splinter?"

The GOBN Commissioner's Office unveils a new gimmick -- The Loaiza Meter. After a 2 ER 6 INN performance last night, Colin Walsh's Esteban Loaiza overcomes the Cricket Curse and gets his 6th win of the season.

P.S. Colin's Loaiza experiment, thus far, has been a failure.

5/2 vs Seattle: 3.7 INN 12.273 ERA 3.273 WHIP

There is a prophet among us. Drew said, "I will NOT be waiting for the last week to win again this time!" And he was right. He won again this week.

DT's pitching staff had an awful week. They set new lows for SO (27), ERA (7.261), and WHIP (1.613).

Has the Team 51146 retooling begun? Jeff & Jason dropped Sean Burroughs this week.

The Weekly Winner stats and the Best/Worst Week report are on The Good Ol' Boy Network @ AFSN.net web site.

The total team salaries listed in the Transactions Log are incorrect. I'll correct them tonight.

FYI, go to a team's lineup page to see their total salary. Or view "All Teams" lineups to see everyone's at once. Just be sure to select the correct date when you do so... which is what I didn't do yesterday.

04/28/03 6:40 PM

I finally did stats for weeks 1-4. Drew won week 1, DT won week 2, and I won weeks 3 and 4. Unfortunately, my week 4 weekly win wasn't enough to beat Cychosz. We tied 5-5 this week.

Team 51146 finished 9th, 10th, 5th, and 6th in the weekly winner standings. But I'm not ready to declare their "youth draft" a failure yet. I'll give them a couple more weeks before I do that.

Speaking of Team 51146, they had 13 games started in week 3. I had to remove Ryan Franklin's 4/20 start. But it didn't effect the week's outcome. They still lost to Drew 4-6.

Speaking of Drew, he recently had major surgery. As far as I know, everything went okay and he's recovering at home. Wish him well, and congratulate him on his strong GOBN start.

All of the weekly winner stats and the Best/Work Week report are on The Good Ol' Boy Network @ AFSN.net web site.

The first round of free agent bids are due Monday, March 31 at noon Central Time. Everything you need to know about submitting free agent bids is here.

And remember, now that the draft is over, the salary cap has increased to $360.

03/08/03 8:30 PM

The 8th Annual AFSN Fantasy Baseball Draft is Saturday, March 22 at 2 PM Central Time!

There will also be a mock draft on Saturday, March 15 at 2 PM Central Time. It will give us a chance to try the new draft application, see how the salary cap will effect our draft strategy, and help me work out procedures for the real draft day. Unlike the real draft, there will be a 1 minute time limit, auto pilot will be used, and there will be no break. It should only take a couple hours. Come for all or part of it if you can.

02/26/03 1:20 PM

SportsLine's NEW online draft application is ready. And it doesn't use java! Click the Draft Room link in the left hand column of the League Home page.

02/22/03 7:35 PM

Go to The Good Ol' Boy Network @ AFSN.net for instructions on how to (1) communicate accepted trades, (2) make waiver claims, and (3) bid on free agents under the new rules.

For all of the rules, click Help / League Rules. For just the new rules, read the League Rules: Part 2.
